Advances in orthodontic treatment have led to a dramatically more comfortable experience than in past years. As specialists, on the cutting edge of treatment methods, we actively seek treatment methodology and technologies that bring more comfort to the orthodontic experience. Today, we can say we offer comfortable orthodontics! We are a provider of Invisalign® clear aligners which require less adjustments and feel more comfortable when in place than metal braces. Even our metal braces are made more comfortable as we use more elastic titanium wires.

Digital Impressions

For years, whenever you needed a dental crown (cap), your dentist had to make molds of your teeth which required taking an impression of your teeth. A tray filled with a goopy, putty-like material was used so that a three-dimensional model of the prepared tooth could be created. Using this mold, along with a dental lab, we could custom-craft the new crown. At Silver Smiles Orthodontics, we now have a digital scanner that can eliminate the impressions of the past.

Here’s how it works

Technology has given us the power to replace impressions of the past with virtual models — made using small, handheld “wands” that employ a digital camera.

This remarkable tool uses blue wavelength light so that we can precisely capture the unique nooks and crannies of your tooth’s surface to make a highly accurate 3D digital model. It enables us to instantaneously examine a tooth and your bite.

How this technology benefits you

Finally, you can say goodbye to the goop, gagging, discomfort, and anxiety you’ve experienced in the past with traditional dental impression materials! It takes less time than traditional dental impressions and makes orthodontic treatment easier than ever.

Most agree that age seven is a good target for an orthodontic evaluation. Typically, the child is in the midst of a growth process. Starting earlier allows your orthodontist to take advantage of this process by moving teeth and creating more space in the mouth in less time that it may take to do so in an older patient. We can also change skeletal structure at this age that helps prevent extractions of permanent teeth, widens palatal arches and improves airway and breathing. Improving airways also improves sleep in these younger children.

However, orthodontics is not reserved for the young. Adults are enjoying the great results as well and for this reason Adult Orthodontic Treatment is becoming increasingly common these days! Recently doctors and orthodontists have found a direct connection between teeth alignment and health problems that affect adults such as sleep apnea, TMJ/D, Persistent Headaches and/or Migraines. Many adults find that seeking treatment is not only possible with an Orthodontist but preferable to other medical methods to solve these issues. Lots of our patients are also realizing a long-standing goal to have improved smiles too! Orthodontics is for EVERYONE!

A lot of our patients come to us because they’ve started noticing some bite problems. Usually around age seven we start to get our first patients. Truly, the sooner the better as left untreated minor bite problems could cause significant problems later in life. Some can even be life threatening! Some of the most common bite problems include these:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crowding
  • Crossbite
  • Excessive spacing

What Kind Of Bite Problems Can Orthodontic Treatment Correct | Silver Smiles

To correct these issues so that they don’t become serious problems later, the teeth must be moved into their correct position within the mouth. Braces, appliances and aligners allow our Orthodontists to achieve that proper alignment as the teeth are not securely set in the bone. Nobody wants a crooked, crowded or misaligned smile. Trust one of our specialists with yours!

How does Orthodontics work?

Generally, orthodontics gradually moves teeth and even reshape the jaw (non-surgical) to correct malocclusion or misaligned teeth. With the use of braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, we create a gentle force that over time moves the teeth into proper alignment. Our orthodontists can give you the beautiful smile you have always wanted all while correcting your bite and improving your overall oral health!

How Do Braces Work?

In their entirety, braces work by applying continuous pressure over a period of time to slowly move teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the bone changes shape as pressure is applied. Once the teeth are moved into the correct position, they are held in this position for a period of time to allow the bone to “memorize” the new position.

Braces are made up of the following components:

  • Brackets are the small squares that are bonded “attached” directly to the front of each tooth. Brackets act like handles, holding the arch wires that move the teeth. There are several types of brackets, including stainless steel brackets, tooth-colored ceramic brackets and gold brackets.  Whether you choose tooth-colored braces or traditional metal braces, at Silver Smiles we use the best products available to make sure the braces are as comfortable as possible.
  • Arch wires attach to the brackets and act to guide the movement of the teeth. Arch wires can be made of metal or be clear, tooth-colored material.
  • Ties are small rubber rings that fasten the arch wire to the brackets. They can be clear, metal, or colored. This is where you can choose the color of your braces. You can change your colors at each appointment.
  • Springs may be placed on the arch wires between brackets to push, pull, open, or close the spaces between teeth.
  • Elastics or rubber bands attach to hooks on brackets and are worn between the upper and lower teeth in various ways. They apply pressure to move the upper teeth against the lower teeth to achieve a perfect fit of individual teeth.

How Do Invisalign Clear Aligners Work?

Clear aligners are a series of trays that deliver pressures to the teeth to move them. Each tray makes minor movements on the teeth so that they are comfortable when you place your trays, but cumulatively these minor movements can correct the alignment of your teeth and your bite. Patients typically wear each tray between 1-2 weeks. Often attachments are required to make movements on the teeth. The attachments are tooth colored shapes bonded or “attached’ directly to the teeth and act like handles for the aligners to grab on to the teeth to make the tooth movements. Sometimes Invisalign can be faster than traditional braces.
