What to do in case of emergency?
Fortunately, there are very few true emergencies in orthodontic treatment. Please call our office to schedule a repair appointment.
Trauma
If you have a lip or oral laceration due to a traumatic accident, please seek emergency medical attention with a physician. Our office is not equipt to handle lacerations. If you have broken brackets, broken wires or any other problem with your braces resulting from a traumatic accident, please call our office to schedule a repair appointment only after the patient’s general health has been addressed.
LOOSE OR BROKEN BRACKETS
Loose or broken brackets can happen during treatment for a variety of reasons. If the bracket is not bothering you, then we can fix this at the patient’s regularly scheduled appointment. If this is a bracket where the rubber bands are affixed or if the bracket is bothering the patient, please call the office to schedule a repair appointment. Fortunately, having a broken or loose bracket generally does not increase the overall treatment time and can be addressed at a future scheduled appointment.
Wire irritations
Sometimes the wires can cause discomfort to cheeks and lips. If the wire is irritating you, please use the wax given by Silver Smiles to cover the offending piece of wire. If you are out of wax, it can be found in the dental section at many grocery stores and pharmacies. If the wire is long and bothersome, you can clip the wire with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sanitized in alcohol. If you cannot resolve the wire irritation, please call our office for a repair appointment.
